Whether you consider yourself to be an environmentalist, an everyday citizen whose life has been impacted by climate change, or someone who is completely new to the concept and are here to learn more, the Sustainable Community Aid Network welcomes you to this year’s Climate Action Awareness Campaign which will be running from March 1-14, 2022.

The campaign will cover a variety of topics regarding climate change, starting off with an overview of what climate change is, its causes, its impacts, and how it affects Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities in Canada in particular. A snippet of some of the specific topics that will be covered include fossil fuel use, deforestation, sea level rise, environmental racism, and climate related laws and policies.

A primary focus of the campaign will be adaptation and mitigation strategies, and how they can be applied to current-day situations as well as in preparation for the future. There’s no need to worry if you are not sure what the terms adaptation and mitigation refer to as they will be explained in more detail especially in the climate change context. For example, adaptive capacity, what that refers to, and why it is an important term.

The main purpose of the campaign is to spread knowledge and awareness about climate change, how it directly impacts Black, Indigenous, and other racialized communities, environmental racism, and Bill C-230. We hope that the takeaway from the campaign is not that there is a single ideal solution to climate change, but that climate change requires creative and diverse solutions that include aspects of both adaptation and mitigation as well as various other strategies. It is a team effort and we are all in this together. We look forward to you joining us in our campaign!
