On April 21st 2022, EnvironFocus ran a webinar that focused on sustainable development goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. The focus of the webinar was SDG 16 and its relation to climate action.
The purpose of SDG 16 is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. And this webinar addressed this SDG by discussing how addressing crime and conflict can help mitigate climate action.
The webinar consisted of two experienced speakers, Ms. Folusho Ajayi Adelekan, and Joachim Okhifo-Quadri.
Speaker 1: Ms. Folusho Ajayi Adelekan
Ms. Folusho Ajayi Adelekan is an experienced Programme Officer with a demonstrated history of working in international development. She is skilled in results based management and inter-governmental coordination, Company Secretarial Work and Legislative Affairs. She is also a strong program and project management professional with a Master of Laws (LLM) focused in International Economic Law from the University of Warwick.
Ms. Folusho Ajayi Adelekan spoke about SDG 16 and crimes that affect the environment, and the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime’s (UNODC) role in strengthening national institutions. Highlights of some of the discussion points that Ms. Folusho Ajayi Adelekan’s presentation focused on are; what are the crimes that affect the environment, the UN’s approach to crime that affect the environment, UNODC’S role, and a discussion about wildfires and forest crime in Nigeria.

Speaker 2: Joachim Okhifo-Quadri
Joachim Okhifo-Quadri is a state program manager who is experienced in program management of complex HIV/AIDS & TB interventions in stable and humanitarian settings. Managing teams to deliver high standards of implementation in a volatile environment, a rare skill of HIV /AIDS service delivery among very mobile and resource-challenged clients in a fragile environment. An experienced manager of Infrastructure with a demonstrated history of working in public health service delivery. Skilled in Global Health, Healthcare, Capacity Building, WASH, Renewable energy, Nonprofit Organizations, and Proposal Writing. Strong operations professional with a focus on Program Management, Operations, Humanitarian, Healthcare, Infection Prevention, and Control, Laboratory Design, and Safety.
Joachim Okhifo-Quadri spoke about peace, justice and strong institutions as keys to mitigate climate change. Highlights of some of the discussion points that Joachim’s presentation focused on are; the template for conflict, the consequences of the conflict, established options for mitigation, and additional follow up options.

“What I think are the next options for mitigating this problem are; empowering local and indigenous groups to self govern through coordinated communal efforts, supportive supervision by government institutions to build local capacity, collective economic ventures, and localisation of commercial ICT solutions.”
“In April 2012, the Lake Chad Water Charter was signed by Heads of State of the six Member countries. The goal of the Charter is primarily to promote sustainable development in the Basin through integrated, equitable and coordinated management of natural resources, in particular the Basin water resources.”
