Dangote – 24 hour light in Lagos State Nigeria

The President of Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, to supply 24 hours light to Lagos State, Nigeria. To do this, they will be running a gas pipeline from Bonny in River State to pass under the sea to Lagos State – This is the part that scares me. More sources of potential pollution in an already polluted State – Rivers state. The Niger delta has already suffered extreme land degradation hugely from oil drilling and busted pipelines resulting from poor handling and pipeline vandalism and the effects can be seen from far and wide. A formally green land is now barren. Now, we are proposing going a step further and going into the sea…. Are we considering the fact that there will be oil spills and more pipeline vandalism and more environmental degradation? 24 hours light is wonderful but at what and whose expense? Will there be an Environmental impact assessment done, or is it just about economics? The mistakes of the West should not be continuously repeated. The environment should be a priority. The health of an environment is directed related to the health of its inhabitants. In my opinion, Nigeria should focus on energy efficiency, followed by renewable energy options.
