In a collaborative spirit aimed at addressing the pressing need for access to safe drinking water in the Niger Delta, the Rotary Club of Benin, in partnership with EnvironFocus initiates the Safe Drinking Water Project in Edo State, Nigeria. This concerted effort aims to enhance access to clean water within the community, addressing a critical public health need.

Esteemed collaborators such as the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, It Begins With U (IBWU), Rotary Club of Brampton, and the BHAFIT Initiative actively contribute to this noble cause.

On January 10, 2024, a pivotal moment unfolded as the Rotary Club installed and handed a LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilter under the Safe Drinking Water Project to the Oko Primary Health Centre.

Rotary Club installed and handed a LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilter under the Safe Drinking Water Project to the Oko Primary Health Centre. The ultrafilter is expected to provide up to 400 patients and staff daily access to safe drinking water.

Oko Primary Health Centre

Situated in Oredo 2, Oredo Local Government, Edo State, the Oko Primary Health Centre is a stalwart healthcare provider. Established on January 1, 2018, with facility code 12/12/1/1/1/0095, registered as Primary Health Care Centre, this healthcare facility operates 24/7, ensuring accessibility to healthcare services whenever needed.

It serves as the primary point of contact for patients at the community or ward level. The healthcare providers at the PHC, comprising nurses, community health workers, and occasionally a general medicine doctor, offer various services. These encompass Special Clinical Services such as Antenatal Care (ANC), Immunization, HIV/ AIDS Services, Non Communicable Diseases, Family Planning, Accidents and Emergency, Nutrition, Health Education and Community Mobilization

Oredo Local Government Area

Oredo Local Government Area (LGA), one of the 18 LGAs in Edo State, spans approximately 43 square kilometres in the southern part of the state. The administrative nucleus of this LGA is in the city of Benin, which also serves as the state capital. With a population surpassing 500,000, Oredo LGA is one of the most populous in Edo State. The predominant Bini ethnic group shapes the cultural milieu, with the Bini language widely spoken.

The economic vibrancy of Oredo LGA hinges on trade, commerce, and services. Benin City, a major commercial and financial center, hosts numerous markets, shops, and businesses. Additionally, the LGA is home to critical government institutions, including the Edo State Government House, the Edo State House of Assembly, and various ministries and agencies.

Water Challenges in Oredo Community: A Clarion Call

A study conducted in the Oredo Community highlighted a pressing issue – 50% of water samples from borehole sources contained coliform bacteria. The presence of these bacteria was attributed to the unhygienic environment around water sources, underscoring the urgency for water treatment to mitigate water-related diseases.

Safe Drinking Water Project

In response to the region’s urgent need for safe drinking water, the carefully selected LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilter, renowned for its cutting-edge technology and proven efficacy, has been delivered and strategically installed in the waiting room area of the health center.

The impact is profound; the ultrafilter is expected to provide up to 400 patients and staff daily access to safe drinking water. This initiative addresses an immediate need for securing a healthier, more sustainable future for the community.

Global Goals in Action

The Safe Drinking Water Project transcends localized efforts; it aligns with key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) is directly addressed by ensuring communities can access clean water. SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) is a central focus, striving to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water resources. Additionally, the initiative resonates with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), showcasing the power of collaboration in achieving sustainable development.

As clean water flows in Oredo, it promises better health, brighter futures, and a thriving community. The collaboration between the Rotary Club of Benin, EnvironFocus, and their collaborators stands as a beacon of proactive change, illustrating the potential of collective action to impact lives positively.
