To address a critical requirement for public health, the Rotary Club of Akure Royals has partnered with EnvironFocus to implement the Safe Drinking Water Project in Ondo State. This collaborative venture involves esteemed collaborators such as the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, It Begins With U (IBWU), Rotary Club of Brampton, and the BHAFIT Initiative. The culmination of this initiative saw the installation and handover of a LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilter under the Safe Drinking Water Project to Don Bosco Health Centre Akure on December 20, 2023.

Don Bosco Health Centre Akure

In Akure, Don Bosco Health Centre is a renowned healthcare facility founded by the Salesians of Don Bosco, an esteemed international non-profit religious congregation dedicated to empowering youth and transforming lives. Established with a mission to address the basic medical needs of the local community and its surroundings, the health center exemplifies compassionate care. It is located at 127, Araromi Street, Akure, Ondo State.

At Don Bosco Health Centre Akure, a spectrum of medical services and diagnostics is offered to ensure the well-being of its patients. These services include competent medical laboratory services, outpatient consultations, eye clinic services, gynecology consultations, X-ray services, Abdomino-pelvic scans, and other necessary ultrasound scans. The facility also houses a well-stocked pharmacy, providing easy access to essential medications. The dedicated team of professionals, comprising experienced doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians, and support staff, is committed to delivering high-quality healthcare services to every patient.

A notable aspect of Don Bosco Health Centre Akure is its proactive approach to community health. The center consistently organizes outreaches, extending its services beyond the facility’s walls to actively contribute to the well-being of the broader community.

Akure: Vibrant Town with Environmental Challenges

Akure, the capital of Ondo state in southwestern Nigeria, is a bustling town at the intersection of roads from Ondo, Ilesha, Ado-Ekiti, and Owo. It is an agricultural trade center for cassava, corn (maize), bananas, rice, palm oil and kernels, okra, rubber, coffee, and pumpkins. With industries ranging from electronics manufacturing to soft drink bottling, Akure is a diverse economic hub. The town also has educational institutions like the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the Federal College of Agriculture.

However, like many communities, Akure faces environmental challenges. Disposing domestic and possibly industrial wastes directly into rivers due to poor implementation of environmental regulations or improper waste disposal management has led to the contamination of water bodies with high parasitic concentrations.

Christmas Cheer in Araromi Community

The Safe Drinking Water Project brought a memorable Christmas season to the Araromi community of Akure. Over 500 families and patients associated with Don Bosco Health Centre Akure received an overwhelming gesture—a LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilter. Installed at the Administrator’s office, the primary source of water distribution within the health center, this ultrafilter is poised to provide up to 400 patients and staff with daily access to safe drinking water.

In response to this unexpected act of benevolence, the leadership of Don Bosco Health Centre, represented by Rev Fr Mathew Adetiloye and Rev Fr Chiemeka, expressed gratitude and pledged to maintain the facility optimally for the benefit of patients and the broader community.

The Membrane Ultrafilter, known for its cutting-edge technology and proven efficacy, represents more than a water filtration system. It symbolizes hope, ensuring communities access safe and clean drinking water—a fundamental element for good health.

Acknowledging this extension of service above self, the Rotary Club of Akure Royals expresses deep gratitude to the collaborators. This collaborative effort goes beyond providing clean water; it signifies a commitment to community well-being and environmental sustainability.

As the Araromi Community embraces this transformative initiative, it ensures access to clean water and sets an example for communities across regions to unite to pursue a healthier, sustainable future. In every drop of clean water, there lies a promise for a better tomorrow.
