Empowering Lives: Rotary Club of Arochukwu Kingdom’s Safe Drinking Water Project in Abia State

To uplift public health, the Rotary Club of Arochukwu Kingdom has joined EnvironFocus to launch the Safe Drinking Water Project in Arochukwu, Abia State. This collaborative initiative aims to significantly enhance access to clean water within the community, addressing a fundamental requirement for public well-being. The project boasts vital collaborators, including the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, It Begins With U (IBWU), the Rotary Club of Brampton, and the BHAFIT Initiative. As part of this endeavour, the Rotary Club installed a LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilter at the Amuvi Health Center in Arochukwu, Abia State.

Amuvi Health Center

Amuvi Health Center, situated in Arochukwu, Abia State, is a testament to community-driven healthcare. Constructed by the Amuvi community and donated to the state government for primary healthcare, the center has a solar-powered borehole to ensure a sustainable water supply. With six beds in both the female and male wards, Amuvi Health Center plays a vital role in meeting the healthcare needs of the local population.

The Community: Arochukwu, Abia State

Abia State, formed in 1991 from the eastern half of Imo State, is a region of varied landscapes encompassing oil palm bushes, tropical rainforests, and hilly woodlands. The predominantly Igbo-populated state is known for its agricultural activities, with staple crops like yams, taro, corn, rice, and cassava.

The industrial hub of Aba, a major center for manufacturing textiles, pharmaceuticals, soap, plastics, cement, footwear, and cosmetics, contributes significantly to the state’s economic tapestry. Umuahia, the state capital, adds to the economic mix with a palm oil processing plant and breweries.

Arochukwu, a town in Abia State, holds historical significance and plays a strategic role in the region’s development. It’s along the road from Calabar to Umuahia, connecting different parts of the state. Amuvi, a village in Arochukwu Local Government Area, is a community committed to healthcare, as demonstrated by the establishment of the Amuvi Health Center.

Addressing Water Quality Challenges in Abia State

A study assessing physicochemical parameters and water quality in communities in Abia State, including Arochukwu, highlighted concerns about poor water quality in different locations and seasons. Several parameters fell below WHO acceptable standards, emphasizing the urgent need for interventions. The call for community leaders to collaborate with the government to provide safe and quality drinking water is echoed in this initiative.

The Project

The Membrane Ultrafilter, selected for its cutting-edge technology and proven efficacy, was installed on January 26, 2024 in the waiting room area, this ultrafilter is anticipated to provide up to 400 patients and staff daily access to safe drinking water. Beyond being a filtration system, it aims to ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for the Arochukwu community.
