To enhance public health, the Rotary Club of Owerri Newton has collaborated with EnvironFocus to launch the Safe Drinking Water Project in Imo State, Nigeria. This project stands as a united front to address the critical need for clean water in local communities, mainly focusing on the Mission Hospitals in Imo state.

The venture has the active support of esteemed partners, including the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, It Begins With U (IBWU), Rotary Club of Brampton, and the BHAFIT Initiative. The project involves the installation of two LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilters in Mission Hospital Ogwa, Alaenyi Ogwa, New St. Peters Anglican Church Ogwa, and Mission Hospital Ngugo, Owerri.

Mission Hospital Ogwa

Mission Hospital Ogwa, located in Alaenyi Ogwa, plays a vital role in the local healthcare landscape. With a theatre and surgical ward, the hospital provides essential medical services to the people of the Ogwa community. Notably, it offers free medical treatment, embodying a commitment to the well-being of the residents.

The hospital was built before the Civil War by the Anglican Community of Ogwa to solve the people’s medical needs. During Governor Mbakwe’s regime, the hospital’s name was changed to Ogwa General Hospital, which specialized in mental issues. The people were not happy about having their hospital specialize in mental health. However, the government later gave it back to the owners, the Anglican community of Ogwa, hence Mission Hospital Ogwa, Alaenyi Ogwa or Ogwa Mission Hospital Ogwa.

The handover ceremony of the ultrafilter took place on January 11, 2024, attended by OGWA Ogwa stakeholders, including the Chairman and Past District Governor, Rtn Dr. Victor Onukwugha, was met with enthusiasm. The hospital’s leadership expressed their gratitude and assurance of responsible maintenance to ensure the community reaps the benefits of this initiative.

Ngugo Mission Hospital: Sustaining a Legacy of Clean Water

The handover at Ngugo Mission Hospital in Owerri was equally significant. It took place on January 23, 2024 and was attended by the Parish Priest, medical professionals, village union members, and Rotarians, the event highlighted the collaborative efforts of the community and Rotary Club. Notably, a Rotary Club initially facilitated the borehole at Ngugo Mission Hospital, demonstrating a sustained commitment to providing clean water. The promise to uphold the maintenance of the newly installed ultrafilter reaffirms the community’s dedication to ensuring its functionality aligns with its intended purpose.

The Community: Water Quality Challenges

Imo State, comprised of 27 Local Government Areas, presents a diverse demographic. With a predominantly rural population, the state faces water quality challenges and the prevalence of waterborne diseases. A study on water quality in the state revealed that sources such as streams, boreholes, and commercially sold sachet water often exceeded WHO standards for bacterial loads. Waterborne diseases were prevalent in various zones, emphasizing the urgent need for interventions to safeguard public health.

The Project

The LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilter, renowned for its cutting-edge technology and proven efficacy was installed in Mission Hospital Ogwa and Ngugo Mission Hospital waiting room areas, these ultrafilters are projected to provide safe drinking water to approximately 800 patients and staff daily. This significant stride aligns with the broader goal of ensuring healthier and more sustainable futures for the communities involved.

The collaboration between EnvironFocus, the Rotary Club of Owerri Newton, and other partners exemplifies the power of collective action in addressing pressing community needs. Beyond delivering ultrafilters, the initiative contributes to a broader narrative of sustainable development, health improvement, and community empowerment.

As the LifeStraw Max Membrane Ultrafilters serves the hospitals in Ogwa and Ngugo, the ripple effects extend beyond immediate health benefits. Clean water catalyzes improved well-being, economic stability, and community resilience. EnvironFocus, Rotary Club of Owerri Newton, and their partners have woven a narrative of sustainability and health. This story unfolds drop by drop, promising a brighter and healthier future for Imo State.
