In a world where technology, economies, and industries are evolving faster than ever, the need for skilled and adaptable youth has never been more critical. Every year on July 15, the world comes together to celebrate World Youth Skills Day—a day dedicated to recognizing the power of skill development in transforming the lives of young people. This day gives an opportunity for this global observance and highlights how equipping youth with the right tools can lead not only to personal success but also to stronger, more resilient communities. But why does this day matter so much?
In 2014, the United Nations General Assembly has announced July 15 as World Youth Skills Day. This day is important because we want to recognize the importance of young people with skills for employment, entrepreneurship and addressing global challenges. We want to continue to recognize this day to bring more discussions for the future of work which includes more green jobs and provide more skills for students to enter the job market. We want to recognize the importance of gender equality where we are able to promote opportunities and increase more women in STEM. As it is important to recognize this day to bring growth in young individuals, peace building and sustainable development.
AI
Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is playing a big role in how young people learn those skills especially through TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training). Some ways young students find themselves learning quickly are through personalized learning. AI has been a smart tutor, allows students to learn at their own pace and helps learners improve by giving suggestions and feedback. AI gives an opportunity for students to create lifelike training environments. Some examples include, repairing a car, nursing tasks and students can practice welding.
AI has also developed students’ understanding on which career fits their skills. It also makes it easier to track progress and get certified when they finish their training. AI has helped many training centers as well keep their lessons up to date. This helps train the employees well and make sure they fit the company’s needs.
Mental health
Mental health support, access to healthcare, and opportunities for social participation are essential for youth. When young people feel mentally well, physically healthy, and socially included, they are far more likely to stay motivated, complete their education, and enter the workforce with confidence. Equally important is ensuring labour market participation creating real, inclusive opportunities for young people to apply their skills in meaningful jobs. This includes fair wages, safe working conditions, and pathways for career growth.
Moreover, recognizing and empowering Indigenous youth is critical. They bring unique knowledge systems, cultural strengths, and perspectives that enrich communities and economies. Supporting Indigenous youth means respecting their rights, preserving their cultures, and ensuring they have equal access to education, training, and employment. Without addressing these broader social and economic factors, skills training alone cannot close the gap.
Raise Awareness
To raise awareness on this important day, the Sustainability Community Aid Network (SCAN) is organizing a webinar on July 15, 2025. More details about the event will be shared soon. The webinar will focus on the importance of digital skills, entrepreneurship, and setting career goals. We’ve partnered with various schools and organizations to support this initiative and help empower our communities. On this day we would like everyone to share a skill they have learned with each other and share how learning that skill has changed their life.
As young people will be the leaders of today and tomorrow. Young people are also seen as powerful, well-informed and determined to make a change. Empowering everyone to become a change-maker, one step at a time, reflects our belief that the future is in our hands and with it, the responsibility to build a better society for generations to come. Through our voices and actions, we’ve shown that we have the strength, adaptability, and diverse skills needed to drive the positive change we envision.
Let’s make a change on World Youth Skills Day by empowering young people with the tools they need to shape a better future. This day is a powerful reminder of the importance of investing in youth potential because when we equip the next generation with skills, we bring progress, innovation, and lasting impact for all.
