Extreme Flooding in Lekki , Lagos Nigeria

Read Time:58 Second

This is what happens when we fill up wetlands (swamps, marshes etc) and other water bodies to build structures and create fantasy islands. There is global warming and the sea levels are rising. When it rains and everywhere is covered with concrete, where do we want the water to go?

The water must be somewhere until it slowly evaporates or seeps into the ground (water cycle). The wetlands that would normally act as sponges are almost extinct and even if there was proper drainage system, the flooding incidents will still happen (Visit places like Canada, US etc..and see for yourself). Nature always seeks to exist in a balance and if people and property are destroyed during its balancing act, so be it…Nature is a powerful force humans cannot control and until we realize that fact, we will continue to loose.
