Food as Medicine and Sustainability Workshop Recap

This Food as Medicine and sustainability workshop explored how sprouting supports both health and low-impact living. On Thursday, July 24, SCAN (Sustainability and Community Action Network) successfully hosted the Sustainability on My Mind: Food as Medicine – Sprouts Workshop at the Four Corners Health Centre in Mississauga.

This free, hands-on event welcomed community members to learn about the health benefits of sprouts. It also showed how sprouting supports a more sustainable lifestyle. The day included a gentle movement therapy session led by the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA), adding a fun and energizing element.

Learning Food as Medicine and Sustainability Together

The workshop created an open space for people of all ages. Attendees learned how to grow sprouts like fenugreek, radish, mung bean, and alfalfa all, without soil soil or a garden.

Health expert Sangeeta Marathe, guided the group. Marathe guided participants through the sprouting process with clarity and enthusiasm. She brought a holistic approach that connected food, physical wellness, and mental well-being. Her background in naturopathy, osteopathy, and hypnotherapy added depth and clarity

Everyone enjoyed samples of simple meals like salads, smoothies, and soups, each made with fresh sprouts. The recipes made healthy eating feel both easy and fun. Events like this highlight how Food as medicine and sustainability connects daily habits to long- term community health

Seeds of Sustainability and Empowerment

The workshop emphasized how sprouting is a low-waste, low-cost, and eco-friendly food practice. This aligns with SCAN’s mission to promote environmental justice and health equity, especially in underserved communities.

Each participant received a free sprouting kit, encouraging them to apply what they learned at home and take ownership of their health journey.
