In a world filled with fast food and stress, what if the path to better health was as simple as a handful of sprouts?
That’s the question SCAN (Sustainability and Community Action Network) is exploring in its latest hands-on community event: Sustainability on My Mind: Food as Medicine. Taking place on Thursday, July 24th, this free workshop invites the Mississauga community to discover how tiny sprouts can deliver mighty health benefits, right from your kitchen counter.

The Power of Sprouts
Sprouts may look small, but their nutritional power is enormous. Packed with antioxidants, enzymes, and vital plant compounds, sprouts help the body fight inflammation, strengthen immunity, and reduce the risk of chronic disease. In this workshop, participants will learn how to grow their own sprouts at home, no garden or soil required.
Beyond their health benefits, sprouts are also an affordable and sustainable food source, aligning with SCAN’s mission to promote environmental and health equity in underserved communities.
What to Expect
Whether you’re new to sprouting or a seasoned wellness enthusiast, this workshop offers something for everyone. Participants will:
- Learn the science of antioxidants and how they protect the body
- Understand how sprouts support detox, immunity, and disease prevention
- Get step-by-step guidance on sprouting at home
- Explore the link between sustainability, food security, and wellness
- Sample simple, delicious sprout-based recipes
- Take home a FREE sprouting kit to kickstart their own mini garden
Meet the Facilitator: Sangeeta Marathe
Leading the session is Sangeeta Marathe, a holistic health expert with a deep commitment to integrative wellness. As a naturopath, osteopath, and hypnotherapist, Sangeeta blends science and spirituality to help individuals manage chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, while nurturing emotional balance and mental well-being.
Her compassionate, engaging teaching style ensures that every participant walks away with practical tools they can apply immediately.

Why Focus on Antioxidants?
Our bodies are constantly exposed to environmental and dietary stress, which causes oxidative damage and accelerates aging and disease. Sprouts, especially broccoli and radish varieties, are rich in sulforaphane, vitamins C & E, polyphenols, and digestive enzymes, natural compounds known to:
- Neutralize free radicals
- Reduce inflammation
- Support detoxification
- Strengthen the immune system
- Lower the risk of chronic conditions

Building Health and Community Resilience
This workshop is part of SCAN’s ongoing Sustainability on My Mind initiative, which aims to make wellness education accessible, culturally inclusive, and practical for everyday life, especially in underserved and visible minority communities.
Beyond nutrition, the event fosters community connection and encourages participants to take ownership of their health through sustainable, low-cost practices.
“This is more than just a workshop. It’s a space for growth, learning, and empowerment,” says a SCAN representative. “We want everyone to walk away knowing that wellness is within reach, and it can start with something as simple as a sprout.”
