SCAN and Wellfort Community Health Services Host Foot Health Education and Care Workshop

On October 13, 2025, the Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN) partnered with Wellfort Community Health Services to host a Foot Health Education and Care workshop in Mississauga, Ontario. This is part of our ongoing Building Resilient Communities Through Health Equity workshop series.

Held at the Four Corners Health Centre, the event brought together residents, seniors, and community members for a day of learning, awareness, and empowerment. The goal was to promote education on diabetic foot health, improve access to community foot care and diabetes management resources, and encourage open conversations about maintaining mobility and overall well-being.

Active Living for Better Foot Health

Before the main presentation, participants joined a low-impact group exercise session, designed for all ages and fitness levels. Participants were encouraged to join a session of gentle line dancing. This interactive activity encouraged movement, laughter, and connection, reinforcing how physical activity plays a vital role in improving foot health and overall wellness.

Empowering the Community Through Mental Health Awareness

The workshop, developed by SCAN and Wellfort, focused on promoting foot health education and connecting proper foot care to overall well-being and independence. Participants explored how foot health determines mobility, quality of life, and overall wellbeing. Adefunke Awojide from Wellfort hosted a wonderful presentation that talked about the importance of foot care, symptoms to look out for, and when to seek help.

Key topics included:

  • Exploring challenges to foot care faced by seniors and newcomers, such as limited access to care, financial barriers, and cultural or language challenges.
  • Recognizing early signs of foot problems, including pain, swelling, numbness, or slow-healing wounds.
  • Understanding at-home exercises and strategies for foot care, such as regular check-ups and proper footwear.

After the main presentation, participants were encouraged to participate in a Q&A session, having the opportunity to ask an expert about any questions or concerns that they had.
