Global Environmental Round-Up: Oct 19–27, 2025

The international environmental stage continues shifting rapidly. Here are three major stories that demand attention from sustainability professionals and people that care.

1. Mosquitoes Found for First Time in Iceland

For the first time in its history, Iceland has recorded the presence of mosquitoes — three specimens of the cold-adapted species Culiseta annulata were found in mid-October.1 Scientists link the development to warming Arctic conditions and suggest new habitats are emerging for disease-vector insects.
Implications: Shifting biogeographies mean that diseases once confined to warmer zones may expand their ranges; public-health and climate-adaptation strategies must integrate vector-risk modelling.

2. Global Call for Multi-Hazard Early-Warning Systems

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has emphasised the urgent need for nation-wide multi-hazard early-warning systems to better protect against storms, floods and heat-waves.2 For sustainability planners, this accelerates the integration of resilience infrastructure and climate-risk mitigation into investment planning and urban design.

3. High-Latitude Ecosystems Under Pressure

Although not Canada-specific, the Iceland mosquito story signals a broader pattern: ecosystems once stable in cooler zones are now transforming. Warming of Arctic regions is enabling insect migration and may herald broader ecological shifts (permafrost thawing, species migration, altered carbon sinks).
Implications: Biodiversity loss, ecosystem disruption and supply-chain vulnerabilities are escalating. Sustainability professionals must widen their scope beyond emissions to include natural-capital risks and system-feedback loops.

“Every one of the last 10 years has been the hottest in history. Ocean heat is breaking records while decimating ecosystems. And no country is safe from fires, floods, storms and heatwaves.”

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
