Mental Health Awareness in Mississauga: SCAN & Wellfort Workshop

SCAN and Wellfort Community Health Services Host Mental Health Education Workshop

On October 9, 2025, the Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN) partnered with Wellfort Community Health Services to host Mental Health and Me in Mississauga, Ontario, the second session in SCAN’s ongoing Mental Health Education and Support Workshop Series.

Held at the Four Corners Health Centre, the event brought together residents, seniors, and community members for a day of learning, awareness, and empowerment. The goal was to promote mental health education, improve access to community mental health resources, and encourage open conversations about emotional well-being.

Empowering the Community Through Mental Health Awareness

The workshop, developed by SCAN’s mental health education team, focused on connecting mental wellness to community resilience and equity. Participants explored how mental health intersects with belonging, inclusion, and access to care, particularly within diverse and visible minority communities.

Key topics included:

  • Understanding the connection between mental health, equity, and inclusion.
  • Exploring challenges faced by seniors and newcomers, such as isolation, stigma, and language barriers.
  • Recognizing signs of stress, burnout, and disconnection in daily life.

Attendees also discussed how social and cultural factors shape mental health outcomes and learned practical ways to build resilience through self-care, healthy relationships, and community support.

Between presentations, participants joined a 10-minute guided meditation and breathing exercise ,emphasizing the role of mindfulness in managing stress and maintaining balance.

Accessing Local Mental Health Resources in Mississauga

The second session provided attendees with practical tools to find and use mental health services in their community. Experts guided participants through:

  • When and how to seek professional mental health support.
  • Available in-person services, including family doctors, counsellors, and community health centres.
  • Virtual and online supports, such as counselling platforms, self-guided wellness tools, and crisis lines.

Attendees shared personal experiences and were given a step-by-step guide to accessing mental health care in Mississauga. Each participant also received free resources and helpline contacts to continue supporting their own mental well-being and that of others in their community.

Active Living for Better Mental Health

To wrap up the event, participants joined a low-impact group exercise session, designed for all ages and fitness levels. This interactive activity encouraged movement, laughter, and connection, reinforcing how physical activity plays a vital role in improving mental health and overall wellness.
