Nigeria’s preparatory activities for the upcoming UNFCCC COP 21

EnvironFocus represented by Obie Agusiegbe was one of the climate change negotiators that attended the two-day training workshop for climate change negotiators. This was organized by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Environment’s Department of Climate Change in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Abuja, Nigeria on October 5-6, 2015.

The negotiators were educated on Nigeria’s current position in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which in line with African groups’ plan that is based on equitable multilateral rules with strong link to fair access to sustainable financing. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Nana Fatima Med opened the event and made the government’s position known to the negotiators.

One of the goals of the training was to strengthen the technical capacity of Nigeria in the development of actions that allow the mainstreaming of climate change into national and sectoral development goals. It was also a forum that was used to review and designed the Climate Change Agreement Document as it will benefit Nigeria for the upcoming UNFCCC COP 21. The forum was also used to launch the National Policy on Climate Change, which the ministry developed to act as a guide in the implementation on climate change activities.

According to Obie Agusiegbe, Nigeria should  have a plan B incase INDCs (Intended Nationally Determined Contributions) for countries is not adopted. A possible plan B could be the option to cap emissions for all countries. Capping emissions for all countries will definitely reduce emissions and also give room for developing and less polluting countries to continue to  develop.
