What daily activities increase our carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint refers to the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere as a result of the activities and consumption we engage in during our daily lives. This amount is typically calculated as ‘CO₂ equivalent tons’ because the impact of different greenhouse gases on global warming varies.

Many consumption habits we unknowingly engage in during our daily lives increase our carbon footprint, thereby raising greenhouse gas emissions. The source of the electricity we use, our modes of transportation, the food we eat, and the products we buy are key factors that determine our carbon footprint. For instance, traveling by plane causes much more carbon emission compared to public transportation. Similarly, excessive meat consumption and a preference for fast fashion products are habits that contribute to increasing our carbon footprint.

Examples of other daily activities that increase our carbon footprint include:

  • Electricity consumption (leaving the television, computer, or air conditioning on for long periods),
  • Water waste (taking long showers, leaving the tap running, watering gardens and fields irresponsibly for extended periods),
  • Using plastic and single-use products,
  • Not recycling,
  • Producing energy with fossil fuels,
  • The use of chemical fertilizers in agriculture and agricultural production,
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from factories.

All of these activities increase the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, deepening the climate crisis. The heavy use of fossil fuels and industrialization disrupt the carbon balance of our planet, accelerating global warming. This, in turn, makes the effects of climate change more apparent and amplifies the clear warnings nature is giving us.

Severe storms, hurricanes, excessive rainfall, and flooding, changes in seasons, rising temperatures, wildfires caused by drought, and the melting of glaciers… these are all consequences of climate change, and nature is issuing more warnings every day. So, how much attention are we paying to these warnings? Are we ignoring the effects of climate change, or are we starting to take steps toward solutions?

Greenhouse Gas Concentration at Record Levels!

Our carbon footprint is directly linked to greenhouse gas emissions. Every activity and consumption we engage in releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The accumulation of these gases in the atmosphere strengthens the greenhouse effect and leads to the warming of our planet.

Scientists have been researching the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on Earth for years and are issuing strong warnings about it. So, what is the greenhouse effect, and how does it cause global warming? Let’s take a closer look at this issue.

The Earth’s average surface temperature is around 14°C. Have you ever wondered? If Earth didn’t have an atmosphere, this temperature would drop to about -18°C. In other words, thanks to our atmosphere, our planet offers an environment that is approximately 32°C warmer. The main reason for this temperature difference is greenhouse gases and a natural process known as the greenhouse effect.

The Sun sends rays to light up and warm our planet. About 70% of these rays reach the Earth’s surface, where they are absorbed by the land, oceans, and vegetation. The Earth then converts these rays into heat, which helps warm the planet.

However, this process doesn’t end there. The rays that reach the Earth’s surface, after striking surfaces, release heat and return to the atmosphere. Normally, some of this heat reflects back into space, and Earth’s temperature balance is maintained. But the greenhouse gases accumulating in the atmosphere prevent some of the heat from reflecting back into space. This trapped heat causes the Earth’s surface to warm further. This phenomenon is known as the ‘greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect is a natural process. However, the increase in greenhouse gas emissions due to human activities has caused these levels to rise far beyond safe limits, leading to the trapping of excessive heat. This disrupts the natural process, leading to global warming and climate changes.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that in 2023, greenhouse gas concentrations reached record levels, and this will lead to temperature increases in the future. Scientists warn that if greenhouse gas emissions are not controlled, we may face irreversible climate disasters this century. According to the IPCC and other scientists, since the industrial revolution, greenhouse gas emissions and global temperatures have increased by 1.1°C compared to pre-industrial levels. If greenhouse gas emissions are not rapidly reduced, the temperature increase could exceed 1.5°C between 2030 and 2050. A temperature increase beyond 2°C could worsen extreme weather events, accelerate glacier melt, and lead to ecosystem collapses.

Rising Sea Levels:

Since 1900, sea levels have risen by approximately 20 cm. It is predicted that this increase will continue through the end of the century. As a result, coastal cities, island nations, and agricultural areas may be submerged.

Extreme Weather Events and Natural Disasters:

Global warming is causing hurricanes, wildfires, flooding, and droughts to become more frequent and intense. In 2023, Europe and Canada experienced record levels of wildfires. Heatwaves are increasing mortality rates, threatening agricultural production, and leading to food shortages.

Changes in Glaciers and Polar Regions:

Arctic sea ice has been shrinking by 13% every decade. The melting of glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica not only raises sea levels but also exposes ancient microbial life trapped under the ice. This melting could release long-frozen microbes and bacteria, potentially causing unknown effects on ecosystems.

Effects on Ecosystems:

Coral reefs could disappear by 70-90% with a 1.5°C temperature increase. Carbon-storing ecosystems, such as the Amazon rainforest, are being damaged by drought and deforestation. The risk of extinction for animal species is increasing, and endemic plants are disappearing. Ecological balance is disrupted, leading to desertification. Drinking water is decreasing globally, and environmental and air pollution are increasing.

What is Carbon Capture and Storage Technology?

Carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) refers to a set of methods aimed at capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂) emitted into the atmosphere and storing it. This technology offers a crucial solution to reducing CO₂ emissions resulting from the use of fossil fuels. Capturing CO₂, especially from large industrial facilities, plays a significant role in the fight against global warming.

1. Carbon Capture Methods

○ Post-Combustion Capture: In this method, CO₂ is separated from the gases produced after the fuel is burned, preventing its release into the atmosphere.

○ Pre-Combustion Capture: CO₂ is separated from the fuel before combustion and captured using special methods.

○ Oxy-Fuel Combustion: This method uses pure oxygen instead of air for combustion, making CO₂ more concentrated and easier to capture.

2. Carbon Absorption and Separation

○ Carbon Absorption: CO₂ is drawn in by special materials that can selectively absorb the gas.

○ Carbon Desorption: The absorbed CO₂ is separated and purified through specialized processes.

3. Carbon Transport

The captured CO₂ is transported to storage sites through various methods:

○ Pipeline Transport: CO₂ is liquefied and transported through pipelines. This method is the most efficient way to transport large amounts of CO₂.

○ Tanker Transport: In areas without pipelines, liquefied CO₂ is transported via tankers.

4. Carbon Storage

CO₂ is stored in safe underground locations, preventing its release into the atmosphere. Methods used for carbon storage include:

○ Depleted Oil and Gas Reservoirs: CO₂ is injected into old oil and gas fields for storage. These fields are isolated to prevent gas leakage.

○ Saline Aquifers: Underground saline water sources offer suitable areas for CO₂ storage. Over time, CO₂ mineralizes in these formations.

Conclusion:

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology is emerging as a promising solution to combat climate change, but it poses a significant financial burden due to its high installation and operational costs. This situation creates a challenge that requires large investments in this technology. Moreover, in the underground storage method of CCS, safely retaining CO2 for long periods is of critical importance. However, could leaks occur over time in underground storage sites? Could such leaks lead to CO2 being released back into the atmosphere? These questions may have environmental implications, which is concerning.

Nevertheless, CCS can only provide a temporary solution to carbon emissions. A more comprehensive strategy is needed for a long-term solution. The broader use of renewable energy sources is of great importance. Solar, wind, and other clean energy technologies can bring about lasting change by eliminating dependence on fossil fuels. In this context, alongside carbon capture and storage technology, investments in renewable energy will be a key pillar in the fight against climate change.

Furthermore, we can contribute to protecting the environment individually. By using energy-efficient appliances, avoiding water and food waste, reducing plastic waste, and adjusting our consumption habits according to our needs, we can protect our environment. The net-zero goal also supports these efforts. Reducing carbon emissions to zero will be possible not only through industrial solutions but also through changes at the individual and societal levels.

So, what do you think about this technology? In your opinion, does carbon capture and storage technology offer an effective solution in the fight against climate change, or does it have negative aspects as well?
