The Safe Drinking Water Project is positively impacting communities in the Niger Delta, making significant strides in providing access to safe and sanitary drinking water to vulnerable communities. This year, the project has expanded its reach to include public boarding schools in the region, addressing a critical gap in access to clean water for school-aged children. With the overarching goal of reducing waterborne diseases and improving overall well-being, the project exemplifies the commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): Clean Water and Sanitation for All.
According to Temple Oraeki, a water and sanitation expert, “Every child spends an average of six hours in school daily, yet 50% of schools in Nigeria do not have any source of improved water supply.” This statistic underscores the urgency of addressing this issue, as the absence of clean water in schools poses severe health risks for children, including exposure to waterborne illnesses like cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery.
LifeStraw: Innovative Solutions for Clean Water
Since 2017, EnvironFocus has partnered with LifeStraw Vestergaard to distribute LifeStraw Community filters in Nigeria. These innovative microbiological water purifiers are specifically designed for communal settings, making them ideal for schools, where large numbers of children require safe drinking water daily. Each LifeStraw Community filter is capable of filtering up to 100,000 liters of water, removing harmful bacteria, viruses, and protozoa to ensure pathogen-free drinking water.
For this phase of the project, EnvironFocus is collaborating with 10 Rotary Clubs in the Niger Delta to provide 20 LifeStraw Community filters to 10 public boarding schools. The filters were generously donated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, while the Rotary Clubs covered the cost of distributing the filters to the beneficiary schools. These clubs also played a pivotal role in identifying schools that would benefit most from the intervention, ensuring that resources were allocated to areas with the greatest need.
Partnering for Progress: Rotary Clubs in Action
The success of this project would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of the Rotary Clubs involved. The following clubs are integral partners in this initiative:
- Rotary Club of Umuahia
- Rotary Club of Asaba
- Rotary Club of Uyo Urban
- Rotary Club of Yenagoa
- Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Airfield
- Rotary Club of Owerri Newtown
- Rotary Club of Akure Royals
- Rotary Club of Benin
- Rotary Club of Calabar-Tinapa
Each club has been instrumental in coordinating with schools, ensuring the timely delivery of filters, and overseeing their installation. These partnerships highlight the importance of community-driven efforts in achieving long-term sustainability and health outcomes.
Education as a Catalyst for Change: WASH Initiatives
Providing clean water is only part of the solution. To ensure the project’s success and alignment with SDG 6, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) education plays a vital role. Schools receiving the LifeStraw filters also participate in sessions focused on hygiene practices, sanitation, and the significance of clean water. These sessions empower students and staff with the knowledge and tools to maintain good health and prevent waterborne diseases. WASH is one of Rotary’s key causes, and their expertise ensures long-term success through community collaboration and education.
WASH education creates a ripple effect, as students often share what they learn with their families and communities, spreading awareness and fostering a culture of hygiene. This ensures that the benefits of the project extend beyond the schools and into the wider community.
Measuring Impact: What the Project Achieves
The provision of clean water in schools has far-reaching implications. Immediate benefits include reduced cases of waterborne diseases, improved student attendance, and enhanced learning environments. Children who have access to clean water and proper hygiene facilities are more likely to thrive academically and socially, as they are less likely to fall ill or miss school.
Long-term, the project contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty by improving health outcomes, which in turn supports economic development. Healthier students mean healthier communities, creating a foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity in the Niger Delta region.
Looking Ahead
This phase of the Safe Drinking Water Project represents a significant step forward in addressing the water and sanitation challenges facing public boarding schools in Nigeria. However, there is still much work to be done. EnvironFocus remains committed to expanding its reach, partnering with more organizations, and advocating for systemic change to ensure that clean water and sanitation become a reality for all.
In subsequent articles, we will be providing detailed insights into the schools that the project has supported and the transformative impact of all partners’ efforts. These stories will highlight the power of collaboration and the profound difference it can make in the lives of children and communities.
A Call to Action
The Safe Drinking Water Project is a testament to the collective power of partnerships, innovation, and dedication to making a difference. EnvironFocus extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, the Rotary Clubs, and all other stakeholders who have contributed to this initiative. Together, we are creating healthier, more resilient communities and ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
As we continue this journey, we invite individuals, organizations, and institutions to join us in our mission to provide safe drinking water and sanitation to those who need it most. Together, we can achieve SDG 6 and build a world where everyone has access to the basic necessities of life.
Let’s work hand in hand to turn the vision of universal access to clean water and sanitation into a reality.
