Sustainability in Higher Education: Shaping Future Climate Leaders

As the climate crisis grows, universities are making sustainability a priority on campus. This includes everything from classroom teachings to energy use in buildings and student involvement. Colleges and universities are essential in driving change by developing new ideas, managing large operations, and preparing future leaders.

Embedding Environmental Literacy

Sustainability education is expanding beyond environmental science. More universities are integrating sustainability into various fields like engineering, business, law, and the arts. For example, Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability was the first of its kind in the U.S., inspiring similar programs worldwide. Institutions are also increasing support for sustainability, with more campus roles and budgets focused on this effort. The 2023 Higher Education Sustainability Professionals Survey Report shows a rise in sustainability positions, highlighting growing recognition of sustainability as a key priority across campuses.

Sustainable Campus Operations

Universities often manage large campuses, which are like small cities with energy systems, water infrastructure, and housing. This gives them a unique opportunity to model sustainability. At the University of British Columbia (UBC), the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability serves as a “living lab” where students see sustainable technologies in action. This approach connects theory with practice, inspiring students in fields like environmental design and engineering.

Harvard University is working toward fossil-fuel-free campus operations by 2050. Its “Goal Zero” initiative focuses on clean energy, like solar power, and the use of electric vehicles. Harvard’s efforts show students what large-scale sustainability looks like and gives them the tools to create similar changes.

The University of Waterloo also leads with its ambitious Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Waterloo uses its campus as a “living lab” for student projects, where students conduct energy and waste audits, and propose solutions like better waste sorting stations. These student-led projects contribute directly to the university’s sustainability goals and encourage students to take responsibility for environmental outcomes.

Creating a Culture of Action

Student engagement drives many campus sustainability efforts. Universities support this by offering sustainability offices, green funds, and leadership opportunities. At the University of Waterloo, the WUSA Sustainability Project funds student-led initiatives, while universities like McGill and the University of Toronto offer paid internships in sustainability.

Grassroots student activism, including campaigns for fossil fuel divestment and local food initiatives, also pushes universities to take bold action. These efforts shape the priorities of university boards and administrators.

Looking Ahead

In the coming decades, universities must continue to lead by reducing their environmental impact and preparing students to tackle climate challenges. Partnerships with local governments, Indigenous communities, and industries will be crucial in creating sustainable solutions. As universities embed sustainability into teaching, research, and campus life, they will influence climate policy, technological innovation, and empower the next generation of climate leaders.

By integrating sustainability into every aspect of university life, institutions like Harvard, UBC, and the University of Waterloo are showing what climate leadership looks like. These efforts not only teach students about sustainability but also provide them with real-world experience. When students get hands-on with sustainability projects, they gain the confidence and knowledge needed to lead change in their communities and careers.
