Empowering Seniors Through Natural Wellness: Cancer Wellness Workshop Highlights

On November 26th, the Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN) hosted an enlightening and heartwarming workshop in Malton, Mississauga. This session was part of the Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition initiative, a program made possible through the generous support of the New Horizons for Seniors Program. Designed to empower seniors, these workshops share practical knowledge about natural remedies, encouraging participants to take an active role in their health and well-being.

This week’s session focused on Cancer Wellness, exploring holistic approaches to complement conventional cancer treatments. Breast cancer, one of the most common cancers affecting women over 50, was at the center of the discussion. It’s a condition that can also impact men and younger women, whether due to genetics or spontaneous occurrence. While surgery and chemotherapy are the mainstays of treatment, natural remedies can play a vital role in alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life.

A Volunteer’s Journey: Bibi’s Herbal Remedy

The workshop was led by Bibi, a dedicated volunteer who shared her personal story and wisdom. Originally from Guyana, Bibi moved to Canada a few years ago and now resides in Malton. Her passion for holistic healing stems from her own experiences with a loved one battling cancer. “I discovered this remedy through my cousin, and it has been incredibly helpful. I’m thrilled to share it with you all,” she told the group with heartfelt sincerity.

Bibi introduced attendees to a traditional herbal concoction she learned about back home. Herbal concoctions are mixtures of natural ingredients like leaves, roots, seeds, bark, and flowers, boiled to extract their healing properties. While not a replacement for conventional cancer treatments, they can be used as complementary remedies. Of course, consulting a healthcare professional is crucial when incorporating alternative approaches into cancer care.

A Community of Care and Connection

The workshop was more than just a learning session—it was a celebration of resilience and the power of community. Seniors in attendance left not only with a new recipe but also with a renewed sense of empowerment to take charge of their health in natural, sustainable ways.

Through Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition, SCAN continues to create spaces where seniors can share stories, support one another, and learn practical ways to enhance their well-being. This workshop is just one example of the impact small but meaningful initiatives can have on our community’s health and happiness.
