Sustainability on my Mind: Seniors Edition| Skin and Hair Health Workshop

On December 5th, 2024, the Sustainable Community Aid Network (SCAN) hosted an inspiring Sustainability on My Mind: Seniors Edition workshop at Four Corners Health Centre in Mississauga. This engaging session, supported by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), forms part of a broader initiative to empower senior citizens. By providing knowledge and hands-on skills, SCAN enables seniors to lead workshops, sharing their expertise in natural remedies and holistic health practices with their communities.

The workshop was led by Vinda, a Jamaican-born community member who brought her wealth of experience and cultural heritage to the session. After immigrating to Canada, Vinda worked at an airport restaurant, where she honed her skills in sewing and cooking. During this time, she discovered an effective natural remedy for skin and hair health, passed down by her sister. This remedy, rooted in tradition and natural ingredients, has proven beneficial for both her and her family.

The workshop focused on addressing hair loss, a common concern for seniors. Hair loss, or alopecia, can occur due to various factors, including hormonal changes associated with menopause, nutrient deficiencies (like iron, vitamin D, biotin, and protein), and chronic stress. Vinda introduced participants to a simple yet effective herbal-infused oil remedy designed to promote hair growth and enhance scalp health.

Herbal-Infused Oil for Hair Loss

A herbal-infused oil is a blend of carrier oils, like olive or coconut oil, with therapeutic herbs to create a versatile remedy. This oil can be used for massages, skincare, and hair health, providing a natural alternative to chemical-based treatments.

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole red onion (grated)
  • ½ cup organic ginger (grated)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tbsp castor oil
  • 6 pieces of cloves
  • Cloth or strainer

Instructions:

  1. Grate the onion and ginger, then use a cloth or strainer to extract their liquid into a container.
  2. Add the ginger and onion liquid, along with the cloves, to a pot on low heat. (Cloves can be added whole or grated.)
  3. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and transfer to a container.
  4. Mix in the olive oil and castor oil until well combined.
  5. Allow the mixture to cool.
  6. Massage the oil into your scalp using your fingertips, leave it on for 20–30 minutes, and then wash your hair.

Store the remedy in the refrigerator and use it 2–3 times weekly for the best results.

Participants in the workshop left inspired and equipped to try this remedy at home, helping them care for their hair and share the knowledge with others. SCAN’s Sustainability on My Mind workshops continue to foster community connections while highlighting the power of natural and sustainable practices.

Stay tuned for more exciting sessions as we work together to promote environmental and personal sustainability!
