This month we did a webinar on SDG 12. The purpose of SDG 12 is to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, and through this webinar, we got to hear different global perspectives on this topic. The two-day webinar consisted of thought-provoking knowledge sharing and insightful Q & As with our guest speakers, Jimmy O. Adegoke and Derek Alexander-Wilson.

Jimmy O. Adegoke is a tenured faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) where he was Chair of the Department of Geosciences (now Earth & Environmental Sciences) from 2008 to 2010. He was most recently (March 2020 – August 2020) a senior consultant with the Climate Change and Green Growth Department of the African Development Bank Group. Professor Adegoke is an award winning climate scientist and globally recognized environmental leader whose work cuts across science, climate policy, environmental governance and cross-institutional capacity building. He talked about talked about Leveraging Natural Resource Assets for Increased Sustainable Agricultural Production.

Our second speaker was Derek Alexander-Wilson. Derek is the founder and CEO of Zero Carbon Consultants Ltd. His focus is to promote sustainable lifestyles and protect biodiversity, whilst still enjoying the freedom and conveniences that modern societies are based on. He believes that a rapid transition from fossil fuels to a Green Hydrogen based economy is the most viable way to achieve these goals. On day 2 of the webinar, Derek talked about The Green Hydrogen Economy.

We want to thank both of our speakers for sharing their knowledge with us and creating an atmosphere of learning and thoughtful discussions. We are grateful to those who attended the webinar, and we want to make this knowledge accessible to those who could not attend, so we are sharing some memorable points and the webinar recordings below.

Jimmy O. Adegoke

“Existing resources can be stretched a lot further if there is equity, fairness and consideration across the board of how we use existing resources as a society.”

“The science supports the fact that the resources that we depend on are under stress.”

“We need to look at the agricultural value chain and look at how we can reduce waste.”

Derek Alexander-Wilson

“Every form of food and goods and services, heating and cooling and energy, that we need can be brought easily to you today with zero carbon. The hydrogen economy makes all of that possible.”

“Right now, the average westerner is consuming about 400 gallons of oil to produce food. If you look at the tractors, the combine harvesters, the transport, the ploughs, the farm equipment, all are burning diesel and fossil fuels. They are burning about 400 gallons of oil a year to provide our food. This is massively unsustainable.”
