To commemorate this year’s world water day with the rest of the world and ensure consumption of safe drinking water and to contribute to meet Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goal commitment, Community – Based Initiative for Growth and Sustainability in collaboration with EnvironFocus will create awareness in Takalafiya, a community in Bassan Juwa, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) through water safety plan.
To achieve this, the community will be triggered using the Community – Led Total Sanitation approach, this approach creates awareness on the harmful effects of open defecation on their well being. From the assessment conducted in the community, it was observed that open defecation is being practiced and there are no established structures on ground to sustain the water safety plan to be introduced to the community. To this end, the community will sequentially be taking through the following process:
22nd February 2020 – community triggering through Community – Led Totally Sanitation, marketing of available toilet types and selection of identified natural leaders. This activity is being sponsored by IBWU (It Begins With U) Foundation, a non-profit organization working in Canada and Nigeria to improve the lives of people.
23rd February 2020 – formation and training of WASHCOM (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Committee)
24thFebruary – 7th March 2020 – visits to follow up on the construction of toilets at individual households.
9th March 2020 – pre-triggering of WASHCOM members on water safety plan
