Movie production companies like Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Canada partner with Environment focused organizations on promoting new releases that have an environmental theme. It gives the organization additional tools to provide environmental education and awareness in their communities. Every year, EnvironFocus collaborates with at least one movie production company to promote a new release. We successfully partnered with D Films for the release of Sharkwater Extinction in 2018 and Elevation Pictures for the release of Deepwater Horizon in 2016. This year we are partnering with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Canada for the advanced screening of “The Call of the Wild.” We will be doing an advance screening giveaway to attend the exclusive screening happening in Toronto on February 13, 2020. Look out for information about the contest on our social media sites: Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
Why does EnvironFocus Partner?
During my Adult Education/Training development program with Seneca in 2012, I learnt that adults are motivated to learn or participate when you design a lesson/workshop such that it is relatable and will evoke emotions and reactions. A good movie achieves these effortlessly, and that is why we love entertainment. “Movies affect many of us powerfully because the combined impact of images, music, dialogue, lighting, sound and special effects can elicit deep feelings and help us reflect on our lives. They can help us to understand better our own lives, the lives of those around us and even how our society and culture operate”.
Case Studies
Deepwater Horizon at the time of release was significant. It brought to the fore-front the memory of an eco-system disaster that caused permanent damage to our world. No matter how good BP oil PR team was, it did not take away the fact that something terrible had happened to all of us – human, animal, plant etc. (our eco-system). Presenting this information as a movie was impactful. The film also came out at a time when #KeepItInTheGround was trending.
One of my favourite movies is Avatar because it successfully told a story of the destruction of land and people for natural resources and the invasion of a country for greed and profit, which is our current state of affairs. It showcased a culture that was intertwined with nature and treated every living thing respectfully, even when they hunted an animal for food. It was beautiful to watch. The best part of the movie for me was when Yahweh answered their prayers and won their battle for them, stopping the invasion and destruction of their ecosystem. I loved the fact that it showed that with love at the center, wrongs could be made right. According to Martin Luther King Jr, love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend. He also says, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.” This sayings sum up Avatar for me. During the movie, I went through a range of emotions and reactions. So yes, I love the movie.
Movies get people’s attention
Movies are one of the most effective ways to create awareness and educate people on environmental and social issues because serious topics that will ordinarily be ‘boring’ to people become entertaining. This form of presentation forces them to listen to the information they would usually have ignored. EnvironFocus is happy to partner with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Canada and look forward to partnering with more movie production companies to get the message out that we all have a part to play towards ensuring future generations have a place to call home.
