WHY LBC GEEB? 

The LBC GEEB (Green Energy Efficiency Builders program) began its first cohort in June 2022 and has had major impacts in the community. We have had 10 youths in the peel region trained on how to construct solar panels and wind turbines. They have also been provided an important foundation in the green energy industry. 

Zamani Ra, the executive director of CEED (Circular Environmental Education), started us off with an introductory workshop. She shared her journey with the youths at LBC and introduced the concept of green energy to the youths. Zamani Ra is a black woman who has been amplifying environmental and climate action in Toronto’s underserved communities. This allowed the youths to learn firsthand from a Black woman doing the work in the community.

The youths went on to train with Van Edward Electricals where they learned how to construct solar panels and install wind turbines. It was a successful journey with the youth gaining knowledge and learning how to effectively work individually and in groups. In addition, the youths took the Workplace Hazardous Material Information training and earned themselves the certificate and training in Trades Math. 

We have continued to follow-up with the youth, providing wraparound support.

Transportation was provided to eliminate any barriers stopping the youths from maximizing this opportunity. The youths also get paid throughout the course of training under a paid-internship model.

The LBC GEEB program is the perfect way to introduce young adults into the world of green energy. It is also a great networking environment as the youths get the opportunity to form a community of people with similar interests. We plan to make a bigger impact in 2023 and hope that the people who will benefit from this experience will find this program and join in. 

We have formed several relationships with industry experts who will partner with us to provide employment opportunities for the youths upon completion of the pre apprenticeship program.
