EnvironFocus is starting a drive to provide safe drinking water to school children in Nigeria through the provision of 50-litre capacity instant microbial water filters in honour of World Water Day 2020. The drive is to run from February 24th – March 22nd, 2020, Our goal is to ensure the consumption of safe drinking water and contribute to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, 1 (one) Instant microbial water filter will provide safe drinking water for up to 100 children at a time. Current partners include C-BIGS, IBWU Canada and Living Environment.
Background:
Nigeria is a water-stressed country and existing local and multinational organizations use large amounts of water, which has a significant impact on the availability of safe water for the local communities in the area. Additional stress to the environment is the high rate of open defecation which impacts the water quality. Every year, an estimated 124,000 children under the age of 5 die because of diarrhea, mainly due to unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene. Lack of adequate water and sanitation are major causes of other diseases, including respiratory infection and malnutrition
Project Goal:
By March 22, 2020, raise contributions/funds from organizations (contributors) to provide safe water to at least two communities or distribution of instant microbial filters enough for a minimum of 10 schools in Nigeria. Organizations can choose which project interests them.
Target Organizations/Partners:
- Organizations, through their subsidiaries or business relationships, significantly impact the availability of safe water for the local communities in Nigeria.
- Organizations, through their subsidiaries or business relationships, significantly contribute to the waste generated in Nigeria, considerably impacting the environment and the health and wellness of local communities in Nigeria.
- Organizations in the clean technology sector looking to showcase their technology to a broad audience
- Interested organizations
In the context of the Global Responsibility Initiative (GRI) Standard, an organization’s business relationships can include relationships with business partners, entities in its value chain, and any other non-State or State entity directly linked to its business operations, products or services.
Organizations will benefit from the following:
- From a sustainability context, these contributions would count towards achieving Corporate goals for Social Responsibility and meet Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Participating organizations can include these contributions in their sustainability reports under the Global Responsibility Initiative (GRI) Standards guidelines.
- A GRI Referenced Sustainability Report that will speak to their positive contribution to addressing the issues (material topics – water and waste)
- Pictures /or videos of schools served will be provided.
- Your contributions and impact will on display to EnvironFocus’s extensive network via its newsletter, social media sites and online magazine. Environ contact list of over 50,000 is made up of organizations and high-ranking individuals interested in Sustainability in the public and private sectors in North America, Africa, Asia, UK and Europe. It also includes media houses and social media influencers.
